Overseas Doctors AHPRA Registration Guide

Australia welcomes qualified doctors from around the world. If you’re an overseas-trained doctor and want to work in Australia, you’ll need to obtain registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Path to General Registration

Here’s a general step-by-step process for most overseas doctors:

  1. Determine your eligibility pathway (Competent Authority, Standard Pathway, or Specialist Pathway).
  2. Prepare documentation (ID, qualifications, work history, English proficiency).
  3. Submit your EPIC verification (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).
  4. Apply to the Medical Board of Australia via AHPRA.
  5. Pass required exams if applicable (AMC CAT MCQ, Clinical Exam or PEP).
  6. Obtain Limited or Provisional Registration.
  7. Complete supervised practice and workplace-based assessments.
  8. Apply for General Registration.
