Overseas Doctors AHPRA Registration Guide
Australia welcomes qualified doctors from around the world. If you’re an overseas-trained doctor and want to work in Australia, you’ll need to obtain registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Path to General Registration
Here’s a general step-by-step process for most overseas doctors:
- Determine your eligibility pathway (Competent Authority, Standard Pathway, or Specialist Pathway).
- Prepare documentation (ID, qualifications, work history, English proficiency).
- Submit your EPIC verification (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).
- Apply to the Medical Board of Australia via AHPRA.
- Pass required exams if applicable (AMC CAT MCQ, Clinical Exam or PEP).
- Obtain Limited or Provisional Registration.
- Complete supervised practice and workplace-based assessments.
- Apply for General Registration.
